Team Energy and Resource Assessment

Work teams of all sorts are valuable in facilitating change. Unfortunately, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. Hospitals and other healthcare organizations are wise to assess their teams periodically to make sure the organization is achieving optimal total results.

Our assessment tool is a questionnaire that assesses teams along two key dimensions: energy (the "soft factors") and resources (members, data, leadership, support, etc.). After scoring, management can see the profile of its teams on the Assessment Matrix, which leads to suggested action steps.

For example, Teams that have low energy despite sufficient resources are Blocked, generally by interpersonal difficulties. Throwing more resources at them will not produce better results. Instead, the factors blocking action must be addressed. In contrast, high-energy teams with insufficient resources are candidates for Burnout instead of success unless they get more resources or a smaller task.

With a solid assessment of its teams, an organization can focus attention and redirect resources for better results, as shown in the figure at left. For example, technical or analytical support could be transferred from a Blocked team to a Burnout team while the Blocked group confronts resistance and strengthens teamwork.

In addition, team members can use the results of individual questions as a guide for self-improvement efforts.

The Kailos group will make this assessment available FREE to any organization or consultant. We request only that you let us know how you used it and what results you achieved.
